Who we are
New Health Journal Institute (NHJI) is a Canadian nonprofit organization that publishes evidence-based reporting and conducts research to improve public health and personal well-being. We combine short, research-driven articles and interviews with original research and online assessment tools designed to help people understand and manage health concerns such as persistent fatigue.
Our mission is to advance health and wellness knowledge by publishing concise, evidence-focused summaries of new research and by developing practical online resources and assessments that give people clear, actionable information about their health. Our editorial work is focused on reporting evidence and making research findings accessible and useful to the public.

Comments
When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.
An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.
Media
If you upload images to the website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website.

Who we share your data with

The health and wellness assessments offered on this Site are developed, maintained, and administered by Nikola Institute (“NI”), an independent provider of assessment technology. NHJI partners with NI through their Pro Bono Program, which allows NHJI to offer these assessments to you at no cost, or a significantly reduced rate.
NI retains all intellectual property rights to the assessment questions, algorithms, and technology. Both NHJI and NI make reasonable efforts to avoid collecting personally identifiable health information. In the event of termination of this partnership, user accounts and associated data may be deleted by NI to protect user privacy. Where possible, data is anonymized to further safeguard user privacy.
Use of anonymous data for research
We use anonymized data collected from our health and well-being assessments for research purposes. Anonymized data means that any information that could identify you has been removed or altered to protect your privacy.
This research helps us to:
- Better understand health and well-being trends.
- Develop new and improved assessments and resources.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of our programs and services.
We may conduct this research ourselves or in collaboration with trusted partners, which may include:

We take the privacy of our users seriously and implement appropriate safeguards to protect the anonymity of the data we share. We do not share any personally identifiable information with our research partners.

How long we retain your data
If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.
For users that register on our website (if any), we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.
What rights you have over your data
If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.
